Decluttering Checklist Template

Copy a decluttering checklist for room zones, timed rounds, keep-donate-trash choices, reset steps, and limits.

Updated 2026-05-16

Use this template before a room reset, closet pass, desk cleanup, counter clear, or storage-bin review when the goal is to finish one visible zone instead of opening every pile. It gives you a start boundary, sorting lanes, stop rules, and exit steps so trash, donations, and relocated items actually leave the room.

# Decluttering Checklist

Room or zone:
Session length:
Stop time:
Main goal:
Do not open:
Supplies:
- Trash bag
- Donation box
- Relocation basket
- Cleaning cloth
- Timer
- Labels or sticky notes
- Clear surface for sorting

## Quick Setup
- [ ] Choose one zone that can be finished in the session length.
- [ ] Put the donation box and trash bag where they are easy to reach.
- [ ] Create one small maybe area, not a second room-sized pile.
- [ ] Take a before photo only if it helps you reset the same spot later.

## Zone Rounds
| Round | Area | Time box | Keep | Donate | Trash | Relocate | Done |
| ---: | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | [drawer, shelf, bin, corner] | [minutes] | | | | | [ ] |
| 2 | [next small area] | [minutes] | | | | | [ ] |
| 3 | [optional area] | [minutes] | | | | | [ ] |

## Decision Prompts
- Keep: I use it, need it, or would choose it again today.
- Donate: It is usable, clean enough to pass on, and not needed here.
- Trash or recycle: It is broken, expired, unsafe, incomplete, or not worth repairing.
- Relocate: It belongs in a different room and should leave this room before the session ends.
- Maybe: It needs a real decision; label it with a review date.

## Boundary Rules
- Open one small area at a time.
- Stop when the timer ends.
- Keep the maybe pile small and labeled.
- Do not start sentimental or paperwork piles unless this session is for them.
- Do not buy storage containers until you know what is staying.

## Exit Steps
- [ ] Take trash and recycling out.
- [ ] Put donations in the car, entryway, or pickup spot.
- [ ] Return relocated items to their rooms.
- [ ] Wipe or reset the cleared surface.
- [ ] Write the next zone for the next session.
- [ ] Take an after photo if it helps you maintain the area.

FAQ

What supplies should I set up first?

Use a trash bag, donation box, relocation basket, cleaning cloth, and a timer before opening the first area.

How do I stop halfway without losing progress?

Finish the current zone, remove trash and donations, and write the next visible area before stopping.

What should go in the maybe pile?

Use the maybe pile only for items that need a real decision, not everything that feels difficult. Label it and give it a review date.

Is this template for whole-home decluttering?

It works best for one room or zone at a time. For a whole home, copy the template for each area instead of running one huge checklist.
